Experience

Over the years of its work, Environmental Company of Sakhalin has successfully implemented more than 700 projects for more than 60 Russian and foreign customers. Today, Environmental Company of Sakhalin is the major non-state environmental engineering company in the Far East of Russia offering its customers a wide range of surveying, monitoring, design engineering, and auditing services under onshore and offshore projects.

The annual number of completed contracts (works and services) consistently exceeds 40–45.

During many years of its business, the Company did not receive any complaints or claims from its customers.

The Company's specialists have set up and are constantly extending and modifying the environmental reference database containing oceanography, meteorology, land hydrology, and ecology sections.

The state-of-the-art software and hardware complex used by the Company enables performing all tasks associated with entry, processing, analysis and interpretation of data and cartographic information.

Advanced data processing applications enable the Project Development, Support & Report Department specialists to solve any tasks as part of their professional activity. Most data processing and analysis applications are original programs developed by Environmental Company of Sakhalin.

Close cooperation with qualified specialists of leading Russian analytical laboratories enables to bring the chemical and biological analysis in line with the world standards.

The Company applies its proprietary methodologies for hydrometeorological, oceanographic and other measurements at drilling rigs, platforms and vessels, in the coastal area, from drifting and fast ice.

The broad range of instruments and measuring equipment used by the Company registers dozens of various environmental parameters. Field information is acquired both at fixed stations and on board of vessels or drilling platforms, as well as by stand-alone stations. Most data are registered in digital form enabling extensive use of up-to-date software applications for their processing and visualization. According to independent experts, Environmental Company of Sakhalin possesses the best set of specialized equipment for field environmental and oceanographic works in Russia.

Among other things, ECS in cooperation with some Russian design offices has developed brand new oceanographic suites for measurement and real time sensing of seawater temperature and salinity, sea level, speed and direction of currents, identification of sea disturbance parameters, and studying lithodynamic processes, and a specialized station for field testing of ice samples with computer registration of results.

All the above combined with many years’ experience of ECS personnel enables a wide range of survey and monitoring works to be performed in accordance with the world standards.

ECS specialists pay special attention to studies of ice conditions offshore the Sea of Okhotsk and the Tatar Strait. In terms of ice conditions, these areas belong to the most severe in freezing Nearctic seas. The ice period there lasts for 8 months. First-year ice with a thickness of more than 0.7m is observed from February till June. Drift and fast ice may contain hammocks which are up to 40 meters thick and up to one kilometer wide posing significant difficulties for navigation and hydraulic engineering.

In addition to the above challenges, navigation is complicated by the extension of ice roads and a long winter navigation period. For many years, ECS specialists have been monitoring drifting and fast ice condition from the air, by landing parties on the ice or as part of diver surveys of ice impacts on the sea bed. The surveying experience has been accumulated to form rich cartographic materials on distribution of ice fields and ice condition throughout its existence. ECS staff has created a detailed ice atlas of the Sea of Japan and the Sea of Okhotsk.

This knowledge and experience can contribute both to development of oil and gas fields and hydraulic engineering, as well as escorting convoys of vessels during winter.

Along with standard methods, ECS specialists have developed proprietary methodologies for highly efficient management of field hydrometeorological measurements and environmental sampling:

  • Integrated environmental monitoring onboard floating drilling rigs and offshore oil and gas production platforms

  • Sea ice studies for engineering purposes

  • Oceanographic works in coastal area

  • Survey of shoreline fluctuations depending on active lithodynamic processes

  • Field laboratory studies using mobile analytical laboratories

  • Development of oceanographic measuring instrument sets based on common hardware and software components
